45.72146.8.1 | Orange 3rd Generation (Capitol Pressing)
Beatles Forever Series

Variation 45.72146.8.1 features a completely different text layout, a bumpy ridge and was made from a new lacquer cut. This pressing marked the beginning of the new in-house Capitol pressing plant operations in Mississauga, Ontario.

Availability

This variation is more common than its previous incarnations and was pressed in larger quantities as part of the Beatles Forever Series (see separate entry in the singles variations page). This pressing was available between June 1976 and 1978 when Capitol changed its design to the purple label.

General Information

In 1976, Capitol Records of Canada launched a wide reissue campaign for nearly all of the Beatles’ singles, introducing them on the orange label (3rd generation). To mark the occasion, they created a special series called “Beatles Forever.” This series featured a distinctive sleeve design: a montage of the four Beatles' heads from Let It Be, printed over a white t-shirt adorned with the Union Jack. While the front cover was uniform across all releases, the back of each sleeve listed the title of the specific single, making each one unique in its own way.

**Note** In some rare instances, some early Beatles Forever sleeves were found with older leftover target label pressings.

This series seems to tie in with the "activation" of Capitol's new pressing plant in Mississauga. This "revival series" also happen to be synched with the UK reissue series as well (with green back cardboard sleeves).

The Canadian Beatles Forever series was part of a large campaign meant to get a new generation of fans to discover the Beatles catalogue (and de facto, boosting global sales of this lucrative catalogue), and was, for the occasion, accompanied by a promotional sticker, an emblematic T-Shirt and a unique box that could fit all 26 discs.

Pressing Information

45.72146.8.1 (Capitol pressing) was also a STEREO release and these were pressed from yet again, another different lacquer cut than 45.72146.7.1. Although the label does not state a stereo release, and although the matrix numbers remain similar to previous mono pressings, the mix found on this pressing is nonetheless a true stereo mix.
