45.72146.1.1 | First pressing - Swirl no brackets
45.72146.1.1 is the very first pressing of Twist And Shout, released on March 16, 1964. This title was released right at the height of the newly exploding Beatlemania phenomenon, sold very well and has been repressed countless times. Very first pressings featured a "no dash" matrix number, while later repressings up until mid 1966 added a "dash and number".

Availability
First pressing with a "no dash matrix" were available starting March 16, 1964, and the following -2 pressings most likely came quickly as demand was high from the very start and plates needed to be replaced with newer plates. This variation (with / without a dash and number) was available up until June 1966, after which the new labels with brackets were introduced (see 45.72146.2.1).
General Information
This single was the seventh title design by Capitol of Canada for the Canadian market, issued on the 72000 series. It was not dubbed from a UK 45 and was made from master tapes to the Canadian Twist And Shout album. Just like it predecessors, it received massive airplay, charted to No.1 and sold well above 90 000 copies (source: P. Hemmingsen, The Beatles’ Canadian Discography part. 3). Twist And Shout was released within days of another massive hit "Can't Buy Me Love". Having three different new records available to the public within a week, the new titles seem to have "shared the market" in 1964, together selling as much as All My Loving, but individually selling about half the number of copies each. This coupling was prepared following feedback from sales representatives (source: P. Hemmingsen, The Beatles’ Canadian Discography part. 1),
Pressing Information
This 45 was a Canadian creation by Capitol of Canada hence the "CC" matrix (Capitol Canada). The master tape for the Twist And Shout LP was available and was used for this single as well. Copies with "no dash and number" are from March 1964, with -2 copies coming very soon after. Copies up to -6 have been documented, with some "dash and number" copies also having a "No.X" following the matrix, pointing to more than 6 different lacquers made (each "dash and numbers lacquers having "sublacquers" of their own).

Sales
Twist And Shout was released while All My Loving was still at No.1. Twist And Shout reached No. 8 upon release, and climbed to No. 3 at its peak (source: P. Hemmingsen, The Beatles’ Canadian Discography part. 1). It went on to sell 97 405 copies in 1964, with an extra 2585 copies in 1965 (official sales numbers). This was the last of the unique Canadian Beatles 45s from the 72 000 series to chart (source: P. Hemmingsen, The Beatles’ Canadian Discography part. 3).
