The Big Hits from England and the U.S.A.
Canadian pressing of a USA Capitol compilation
LP.2125.1.1 | Rainbow (Scranton plates)
This album was a Capitol USA creation, but it was also issued in Canada. This mono compilation featured two Beatles tracks that were popular at the time of release. It sold very poorly and is considered hard to find today.
Availability
This variation was available in September 1964 as an effort to promote the popular US and UK Capitol roster of artists at the time. It was never repressed.
General Information
After the Chartbusters series, Capitol Records continued launching other compilation albums showcasing recent hits from its roster of artists. Chartbusters 4 had featured two "new" Beatles tracks, and Big Hits now featured Can't Buy Me Love and You Can't Do That. All in all, this compilation also went largely unnoticed in Canada (like Charbuters vol. 4).
The compilation is a USA creation, but was nonetheless made available in Canada, with a Canadian pressed disc and a cover featuring a Canadian back slick.
Pressing Information
Unlike the USA, Canada only issued a MONO version of the album. This mono pressing was pressed at RCA in Smiths Falls from pressing plates sent from the Scranton pressing plant in the USA. It featured machine-stamped matrix numbers, as well as the triangular IAM logo, designating the Scranton pressing plant:
T1-2125-H1 △
T2-2125-J2 #3 △
Cover
The cover was "assembled" in Canada, featuring a Canadian back slick printed by Parr's that was added over the US made cover. This is in some way the very first Beatles Pasteover. Only the pasted back slick is Canadian, otherwise the cover it was added onto is completely USA-made.
Some copies show the USA cover "leaking" out from underneath the Canadian pasteover slick:
Packaging
These were packaged in tight shrink wrap.
These were most likely sold with / without a red and white Capitol / Pathe paper LP inner sleeve (apparently designed by Paul White).
