Long Tall Sally Variations List

Long Tall Sally

This album was a unique Canadian release

LP.6063.5.2 | Red Target, Parr's Trimmed Cover

Variation LP.6063.5.2 is identical to LP.6063.5.1, besides the fact that it features a TRIMMED stereo banner cover (a black line is still available at the top of the front slick). This pressing is otherwise recognized by its Red Target label.

Availability

This variation was available primarily in late 1971 (for approximately a few months) before covers were printed by Modern Graphics (see LP.6063.6.1).

General Information

A quick solution allowing Capitol to salvage the error covers was to simply trim off the Stereo Banner from the top and use the modified front slicks as per usual. Many of these trimmed slicks still show the black line found at the bottom of the banner. LP.6063.5.2 is therefore the variation with the trimmed slicks with a black line.

Pressing Information

After a short hiatus (a pause in the pressing of the three unique Canadian albums), Capitol of Canada subcontracted once again the RCA pressing plant in Smith Falls (Ontario) to manufacture new batches of albums, this time with the new "Red Target" label. No green target label pressings have been confirmed to date, so this marks Capitol's decision to keep offering these albums to Canadian fans. Known copies still have the same "-2" matrix numbers as previous variations. Some have -2 on both sides, other copies only on side B:

Side A: XEX 455 471
Side B: XEX 456 472-2

This pressing has also seen a few copies with a different type of pressing ring that looks more like a deep "dish" depression (image on the right) rather than the usual RCA "groove" (image on the left). There have been much discussion over the years as to the nature of these different pressing rings (a faulty RCA pressing, a different machine, a Columbia pressing, etc.), but it is the opinion of the authors that these are in fact simply a "faulty" RCA pressing.

Evidence pointing in this direction has shown discs (from other albums with only a one-off pressing run) where one side showed a traditional RCA ring, while the other bears the odd dish-like impression, indicating they are not from another source, but simply a manufacturing variation within a single batch. It is not certain what cause this variation, but current theories revolve around pressure applied during the pressing process, or an air bubble trapped between the vinyl biscuit and the press. For more details on this type of ring, see the RCA entry in the "Canadian Pressing Plants" section of the FORMATS page.

Cover

This pressing is also unique because of its TRIMMED front slick printed by Parr's, assembled at Modern Album. Mistake stereo slick were prepared (only Long Tall Sally has been documented to date).

The stereo banner was trimmed off in order to recyle the slicks. Some slicks were badly trimmed and still show the bottom edge of the banner (this variation: LP.6063.5.2). Here are two examples of these badly trimmed Parr's slicks:

The cover of this variation is otherwise constructed like the previous variations: printed by Parr's, with a straight inner seam construction measuring approximately 8 mm.

This cover is also built with a traditional front slick cover.

Packaging

This edition was shipped in tight shrink wrap, with or without a plain paper LP inner sleeve. These Capitol sleeves are square and have a slight curve at the top.
